Hello again! So today is day two, and it's been marginally better for overall coolness. Last night we decided to "camp out" in the van at the Badlands National Park. While it was dry, and mostly warm, I had to make due with the front two seats while Ben got the back. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep, but what I did get was to see the sunrise at about 5:45, which was pretty sweet! I even got a couple pictures of it.
After that I slept a little bit then got Ben up around 7:45. We went looking around for somewhere to hike around and got sidetracked from the whole breakfast thing (as of 2:13 we've still had nothing to eat). We found a place with a pretty cool trail, but it was too muddy for me and my old tennis shoes to climb, but Ben was able to traverse it and make it way up to the top. You'll see the top of the pyramid type deal he made it to in a picture.
The Badlands themselves were also pretty awesome. The name is very appropriate when you think about it, seeing it for the first time a settler might very well call them bad lands. They look inhospitable to anything besides crappy prairie grass (barely a tree anywhere), and the clay(?) that the plateaus and things are made up with looks very bad as a soil. But that's just an educated guess. And while it looks fun to climb and scramble around on, they were way more slippery than you might guess. I'll take Bryce canyon/Garden of the God's over the Badlands any day of the week! Notwithstanding, they were still pretty cool looking, so I'll put up some pictures for you all.
And now we're heading to Custer State Park in South Dakota to camp out for a couple days! We'll post again as soon as possible!
